The Department of Energy released diesel fuel pricing data Monday showing diesel fuel prices rising for the 11th straight week, up 2.1 cents to $3.534. That's 77.8 cents higher than this same time last year.

Please wait a second before being upset at this headline. Before this article goes any further, politics don't sway my view on higher taxes, which will increase diesel fuel prices and gas prices -- but common sense might.
What can you buy today for the same price as you did in 1993? If you answered federal tax on diesel and gas, you are 100 percent correct. Since the tax on diesel fuel prices was 24.4 cents in 1993 and gas tax was18.4 cents, if they were adjusted for inflation they should be 43 cents on diesel fuel and 36 on gas. If those taxes had been collecting over the last 17 years, would our highway system be better? Read Full Article

In this day and age of high diesel fuel prices, fleet managers need to have a fairly comprehensive knowledge of the fleet fuel market. This was not always the case. Years ago when diesel fuel prices were considerably less expensive than it is today, and market instability was a daily move in the wholesale market of less than a penny, the fleet manager considered fueling as just another operating expense. After all a price increase of less than a penny was not going to bankrupt his company.

Does anyone remember the days when the only time we thought about high diesel fuel prices was when OPEC decided to mess with us? Fuel cards use to be handed out and drivers would fuel at any place they wanted.
Unfortunately, it still does happen at a few companies. Back in the old days no one really paid attention to fuel management. It wasn't that important. But today, fuel management better be part of the picture, or companies just won't get the fuel savings that they should be. Read Full Article
